HOW TO BUY THE perfect SUIT
Here’s how to get it right every time
Purchasing a suit isn’t as simple as pressing “add to cart” on a plain white tee. It’s just as essential, but the sartorial stakes are that much higher. But where to start? We spoke with Jose A. Roman, store manager for Brioni CityCenterDC, who offered his top three tips for buying the perfect suit.
Consider the “Why”
So you’re looking to invest in a suit. This closet staple can serve many kinds of occasions and lifestyles, but narrowing it down to your specific needs is key. Knowing “the ‘why’ [of why one is buying a suit] is vital in achieving the look a client is going for,” says Roman. Whether it’s an upcoming wedding, the go-to for client meetings or a multifunctional suit that can do it all, your intended use will be instrumental in determining the chosen fabric, style and fit. No need to be overwhelmed, though. “Brioni simplifies the ‘why’ through dialogue and provides an opportunity for the client to integrate themselves into the experience,” says Roman.
Focus on Fit
One way to elevate a great suit to an extraordinary one is by ensuring the fit is just right, balancing one’s physique from every angle. Chest and shoulders are the initial measurements an associate will take note of, as they can be the difference between an okay suit and one that knocks it out of the park. “Shoulders should nestle without impinging with how the rest of the garment drapes past the shoulders,” says Roman. As for the chest, “there should be enough room across the back to allow for comfortable movement without bunching in any direction,” he offers. Need some extra special attention? A tailor can shorten lengths, let out or take in the chest without compromising the integrity.

Contemporary
If you’re going to invest in one suit, make sure it’s imbued with everlasting appeal. On the homefront, “DC clients enjoy wearing the traditional two-buttoned suit,” says Roman. Another on-the-rise trend in the suiting world? The double-breasted silhouette—always a beautiful addition to a versatile wardrobe. “It is definitely a modest statement and exemplifies a European sophistication for ‘dapper’ style-makers,” Roman offers. In 2025, keep an eye out for subtle patterns that look solid from afar and unlined jackets with less structure, he adds.
