MEET ABA KWAWU

PORTRAIT

Aba Kwawu

“I show the joys and the challenges and all of those nuances that come with that. ”

In our newest column, Person of Interest, we spotlight a cool local who walks us through the DC they know and love. This month, we’re introducing you to Aba Kwawu, the founder of DC-based TAA Public Relations, a lifestyle public relations, marketing and special events firm. As we celebrate National Black Business Month, Kwawu shares her rise to revered PR pro, what kind of leader she is and how she sneaks in some much-deserved down time (hint: CityCenterDC plays a part!)

Q&A

As the President and founder of TAA PR, what kind of leader are you?

“I’m a lead-by-example type of leader—that’s the short answer. What I mean by that is, I show and tell. I don’t hide. I’m the person on the floor, putting together hundreds of boxes of truffle popcorn, which I’ve done [laughs]. I’m the same person who will get dolled up and moderate a discussion on stage. I show the joys and the challenges and all of those nuances that come with that. I’m really fulfilled with the work that I do.”

What does downtime look like for you?

“I make time to unplug and I’m more intentional now than any other time in my life. I like to cook a lot and find new recipes but our thing, which we do as a family, is travel. London, Marrakesh, my home country Ghana—we love to immerse ourselves in different cultures.”

How would you spend the perfect day perusing CityCenterDC?

“I would start my day at Piccolina with a cup of oat milk chai and the ratatouille omlette while I answer emails. From there, I would go out into Palmer Alley and look up. Not only look up and think ‘life is beautiful, you can do this’ but look up at the beautiful art that’s there. I also take a lot of meetings at CityCenterDC. Just this month, I took clients to Centrolina and we ended up with five orders of the branzino because I’m obsessed with it.”
