WINNER
Tung Nguyen

WINNER
Tung Nguyen

The 250 Years of American Style competition invited artists and designers from across the country to explore the evolution of American identity through public art. More than 125 submissions were received from architects, artists, and multidisciplinary creatives, each offering a unique perspective on style, culture, and community.

The selected installation will debut in Palmer Alley in June 2026 as part of CityCenterDC’s public art program and the citywide America 250 celebrations. We extend our sincere thanks to every artist who shared their vision and helped shape this inspiring collection of ideas.

ABOUT THE WINNER

Artist and architect Tung Nguyen was selected as the winner of 250 Years of American Style for Urban Living Rooms, a site-specific installation that transforms Palmer Alley through a series of suspended living room environments.

Blending architecture, storytelling, and cultural memory, the work explores the living room as a space that exists between private and public life—where people gather, host, connect, and express who they are. Each suspended environment offers a distinct interpretation of identity and community, turning familiar domestic spaces into an immersive public experience.

Originally from Vietnam, Nguyen studied at Texas A&M University and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. His public art projects include installations at Lincoln Center in New York City and Glass City Metropark in Toledo, Ohio. He currently serves as a lecturer at the Rice School of Architecture.

NOTABLE ENTRIES

The Jury also recognized several entries whose proposals offered thoughtful and visually compelling interpretations of 250 Years of American Style.

Notable entries included Pluribus by Julian Lang, Unity in Diversity by Maxim Mirnov, and Between the Stripes by Mackenzie Zendt. Each proposal brought a distinct creative perspective to the competition, contributing to a broader conversation around identity, culture, and the evolving expression of American style.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all participating artists for sharing their creativity, vision, and imagination with CityCenterDC.

CityCenterDC extends its gratitude to this year’s distinguished jury for their time, insight, and thoughtful consideration in selecting the winning concept for 250 Years of American Style. Their collective perspectives across fashion, design, art, and culture helped shape a competition that celebrates creativity, identity, and the evolving expression of American style.
